Different stones in the marble family – limestone, travertine, marble, onyx – starts out as sediment at the bottom of lakes and seas. This sediment eventually solidifies into marble but is still porous and susceptible to staining.

Types of Marble Sinks

There are a variety of marble sinks on the market, and it’s important to decide which is the right type to choose for your bath redesign. First, remember that marble is a soft limestone and is not as durable as granite. However, their elegance is marking, as no two pieces of marble look alike.

Sculpted from stone native to countries from around the world, marble stone sinks are used in vessel mount, top mount and even under-mount installations. Vessel mounts are very contemporary, top-mount designs that are currently extremely popular. Marble sinks are also often used for undermount designs, mounted directly under your vanity.

In addition to standard marble sinks, many designers offer mosaic sinks made from pieces of individual natural marble.

Caring for Marble Sinks

There is no sure way of protecting marble against staining from colored fluids. Cleaning is little more difficult as marble sinks are highly porous and absorbent. Consider sealing your marble sink for highest prevention. For regular cleaning use soft cleaning liquid that contains mild bleach or detergent. Acidic solutions can cause etching of the marble sinks. Avoid contact with orange juice, soft drinks and other acidic materials and your marble sink and don’t use acidic cleaners. Marble sinks should be rinsed and dried after each use to prevent water spots. If all else fails, you will need to get your marble sink polished and finished by an expert.
